Georgia O’Keeffe spent her childhood on a farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students’ League of New York. O’Keeffe worked as a commercial artist and taught art in public schools in Amarillo, Texas. In 1916 photographer Alfred Stieglitz discovered her work and included O’Keeffe in an exhibition he organized. She quickly came to the attention of the art world. O'Keeffe's expressionistic paintings use simplified forms such as desert landscapes and flowers. Some of her paintings include southwestern landscapes. Her interest in the area began after a visit to New Mexico in 1929. After Stieglitz died, O'Keeffe moved from New York to a ranch outside Taos, New Mexico. She joined a community of artists and writers. Although O'Keeffe is mostly known for the paintings she did in the 1920s through the 1940s, she remained an active artist until late in life.
